The Mobile Geeks of London

Hello all,

Following on from an earlier post – allow me to tell you a story…

It started as a simple question ‘Hey, we both live in London, do you fancy a drink sometime?’
That question was asked from one avid Jaiku fan to another.
(Yours truly and a guy named Romek)

From there – it snowballed…
We found a channel on Jaiku specifically for UK Jaiku users – called JaikUK

Then – upon finding that channel – I decided that’d be a great idea if we had a Facebook Group too.
And so Mobile Geeks of London was born…

It was, at first, made as a ‘base of operations’ if you will for me and a few fellow ‘mobilists’ who I knew lived in and around our great city to come together and chat…
And then, word got out that two of the members were meeting for a beer.

“Sod it!” I thought “Why not make it a full-blown facebook event?!”

And so I did.
Next thing I knew – SMS Text News picked up on it and ran it as a story – and overnight the group went from around 10 members to 110!

The Date: Thursday 26th July
The Event: The first ever Mobile Geeks of London meet up
The Place: A Pub in London
The Attendees: Mobile Geeks!

It. Was Great.

The whole evening had this kind of unofficial theme of ‘Show & Tell’

Some folk were there showing off new software – some other folk were throwing new mobile ideas around and some folk were just showing off their various handsets… an iPhone even made it along!
Hehehe…

However, I must admit, I think that was probably the main lure for peeps coming along in the first place!

Everyone wanted to touch it!
Hehehe – Here’s some photos from the evening folks – enjoy!

Geeks – Phones – Beer – Heaven

James Body. He of Truphone fame.
With my iPhone and his E61i.
Which one do you prefer?

My new friend Peter (aka Romek).
He was the guy that originally asked me out for a Mobile Geek drink!
It’s all his fault I swear it!

iPhone-tastic!

All in all the night was a resounding success and I’ve received lots of messages of praise for organising it all.

I couldn’t have done it without my good friend Technokitten who was on hand to offer assistance when the whole thing started getting a bit out of hand!

So – if you’re a Mobile Geek and you live in London – why not join the group and maybe we’ll see you at the next meet!
🙂

Canvey Island

So I’ve just got back from a weekend in Essex on the the beautiful, (no really), Isle of Canvey.

I caught up with some old friends, played some Wii, laughed a hell of a lot and drank a fair bit of wine too!
I know 99% of my readers have never been to Canvey before so I’ve taken the liberty of uploading some photos of the ‘idyllic’ seafront along with the ‘picturesque’ sandy beaches..

All taken with my trusty N95 too!

Once this is uploaded i’ll get to work a little post entitled –

The Mobile Geeks of London

(which I was supposed to write last week!)

But for now… Boats and Beaches!

N93i vs N95 – Camera

Afternoon all.

As previously mentioned I went to a lovely wedding at the weekend and took along my WOM provided N93i (as well as my own N95) to take some shots.
I used both phones throughout but, as I was having such a lovely day, I only really remembered to double up my photos occasionally. Um…

Sorry.

I was at a wedding you know!

Anyway – I’ve finally gone through all my pics (sorted by ‘Camera Model’ – did not know I could do that!) and found the comparison shots…

First batch: My friends

(who insisted on swapping places between photos!)

Can you tell the difference?
This second set was of the converted barn where the reception was held…

Anyone care to guess which photos came from which phone?
To make it fair on the N93i – I reduced the N95’s settings to 3 megapixels…

What do you think?
All opinions welcomed.

Geek-a-thon!

Two things of note today folks.

First, I’ve finally joined the elite in my office and sorted myself out TWO (count ’em) monitors…

I know it’s nothing new, but I’ve been the only one with a single monitor for ages now…
So Yay me!

Next up – a quick picture of the desk next to mine..

‘Hmmm… Which one shall i use today?’

Hehe…

Those of you tuning in for the N93i vs N95 shots I promised from the wedding at the weekend; It won’t be long. I took a ton of photos with both handsets so it’s just gonna take a while to put it together..
I’m working on it though. For now though.. I hope you enjoyed my Geek-a-thon pics…

🙂

Mobile Geeks of London Unite!

“Do you consider yourself a mobile geek? Do you live, work or hang out in (or within easy reach of) London?

SMS Text News reader James Whatley has just launched a Facebook group called Mobile Geeks of London. It’s open to anyone (assuming you’ve got a Facebook account, of course), and promises chat, discussions, and general merriment.

To join up, just click this link. There’s rumours of the first group get-together in London this coming week – and if you ask James nicely he might bring his iPhone along.. :)

More N93i vs N95 shots

Last post before I chip off to Canterbury tomorrow for my friend’s wedding and for the day, I have decided to give the N93i to my friend Dom. She works in TV and does a lot of filming… I know Dom’s been after one of these phones for AGES!

Back when the first video camera phone was announced.. The N90 was it?
Anyway, before I go, I thought I’d post up some more shots of the phone alongside my N95…
Enjoy!

More to follow after the weekend..

Thank You WOM!

Those lovely folk over at WOM World have gone and furnished yours truly with a lovely (if somewhat cumbersome!) Nokia N93i for a grand total of two weeks…

Ain’t that nice of them? 🙂

Am currently writing this blog on the tube on the way home c/o my personal N95 and I must say; it’s gonna be hard to tear myself away from this beauty for a little while…
But, as luck would have it, I’m off to a friend’s wedding this weekend. So I shall be packing my shiny new N93i (with the latest firmware too I hasten to add – Come on..! It was the first thing I checked) and will be giving it a proper test run..

In the meantime – checkout these shots I took today..

Kew Gardens

Managed to swing by Kew Gardens at the weekend… and very beautiful it was too.

A bit hot for my liking and I wasn’t there long but a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon definitely…

All pictures taken and uploaded c/o my N95.
(sod being the landscape gardener there!) 🙂

And for all those Apple fans out there – more iPhone loveliness coming soon!

PROMISE!

iPhone, uPhone… wePhone!

OK, at last I’ve got my hands on an iPhone… I’ve only had a quick play but so far… It’s.. er.. ok!

Nothing uber-amazing.. It’s fun to play with and stuff.
The features are cool etc.. But practically? We’ll see..

As I said – I’ve only had a quick play so I may yet be turned from my N95 (yeah, right)…

Check out the very messy/scrappy video of me having a look at this very blog, care of the iPhone’s Safari browser…
