<p><strong>1. Back to the Future Business Card of WIN</strong><br />
Tom Wilson played &#8216;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biff_Tannen">Biff</a>&#8216; in the <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088763/">Back to the Future</a> films. <a href="http://gawker.com/5909535/biff-tannen-has-a-business-card-that-answers-all-your-annoying-questions-about-back-to-the-future">Apparently</a>, he carries a business card that he gives to fans to answer all those BTTF questions in one.</p>
<p>Perfect.</p>
<p><a href="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/tomwilson.jpeg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-4232" title="Epic" src="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/tomwilson.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="741" /></a></p>
<p><strong>2. Some (more) decent lengthy articles</strong><br />
First up, &#8216;<a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-0506-golden-ticket-20120506,0,3094073,full.story">Frequent fliers who flew too much</a>&#8216; is a brilliant read about unlimited first-class tickets that <em>used to be</em> available from American Airlines.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Creative uses seemed limitless. When bond broker Willard May of Round Rock, Texas, was forced into retirement after a run-in with federal securities regulators in the early 1990s, he turned to his trusty AAirpass to generate income. Using his companion ticket, he began shuttling a Dallas couple back and forth to Europe for $2,000 a month.&#8221;</em></p></blockquote>
<p>You can see why they stopped it. <a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-0506-golden-ticket-20120506,0,3094073,full.story">Have a read</a>.</p>
<p>Next, I&#8217;m halfway through <a href="http://www.wired.com/underwire/2012/05/joss-whedon/all/1">this fantastic interview with Joss Whedon</a>. He directed, amongst a whole host of other things, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0848228/">The Avengers</a>. And he is awesome.</p>
<p>Finally, Kathryn Schulz on &#8216;<a href="http://nymag.com/arts/books/reviews/till-roenneberg-internal-time-2012-5/">Internal Time</a>&#8216; is proving to be a fantastic read. Purely because I never thought I&#8217;d ever read the line &#8216;Modern human beings are not much like mimosas&#8217;. <a href="http://nymag.com/arts/books/reviews/till-roenneberg-internal-time-2012-5/">Check it</a>.</p>
<p><strong>3.</strong> <a href="http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/tokyo-hotaru-festival-2012"><strong>100,000 LED Lights Illuminate a Japanese River</strong></a></p>
<p><strong>4. Retro-active Foursquare tracking</strong><br />
For some reason (and this is <em>proper</em> geeky) I love the idea that you can <a href="http://aboutfoursquare.com/track-your-foursquare-checkins-using-google-calendar/">track your check-ins with GCal</a>. Use case: <em>&#8216;Had a meeting with Robbie the other week at that cool place on Wardour St., what was it called?&#8217;</em> &#8211; which means I now have a 4sq layer in my Google Calendar.</p>
<p><a href="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Love-4sq.png"><img class="alignnone wp-image-4240" title="Love 4sq" src="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Love-4sq.png" alt="" width="525" height="170" /></a></p>
<p>So simple.</p>
<p><a href="http://aboutfoursquare.com/foursquares-hidden-gem-the-feeds-page/">Via</a>.</p>
<p><strong>5. Useful Apps / Plug-ins</strong><br />
<a href="http://attachments.me/">Attachments.me</a> is a great Chrome plug-in for searching through Gmail attachments. It&#8217;s proved to be an absolute life-saver lately. And their CEO, Jesse Miller, is a thoroughly nice chap too.</p>
<p>Build apps in iOS? Take a look at <a href="http://www.alau.me/">Alau.me</a>. It&#8217;s like bit.ly, but for app download tracking.</p>
<p>&#8212;&#8212;-</p>
<p><em>Bonuses -  <strong><a href="http://geektyrant.com/news/2011/10/3/star-wars-toy-photography-is-truly-amazing.html"><em>Stunning Star Wars toy photography</em></a></strong> (click) and <strong><a href="http://jungsketch.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/concept-art-from-avengers.html">Avengers Concept Art</a></strong></em> <em>(below) have both made my day today. Until next time&#8230;</em></p>
<p><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OWnwdeHpVZM/T6u1uBwx6NI/AAAAAAABHUI/4jZ1txjTX3M/s1600/aftermath_update_web.jpg"><img class="alignnone" title="Avengers Concept Art: 'Aftermath'" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OWnwdeHpVZM/T6u1uBwx6NI/AAAAAAABHUI/4jZ1txjTX3M/s1600/aftermath_update_web.jpg" alt="" width="525" height="219" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>&#8216;Aftermath&#8217; &#8211; click to embiggen</em></p>

<p><a href="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/ch4pro.png"><img class="alignnone wp-image-4201" title="#areyouseeingthis" src="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/ch4pro.png" alt="" width="525" height="158" /></a></p>
<p>To find the solution, we first need to fully understand <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Whatleydude/status/199091910340644865">the problem</a>.</p>
<p>2screen / dual-screen / second-screen &#8212; <em>all</em> are different names for the kind of integration that I&#8217;m referring to and it&#8217;s something I&#8217;ve been kicking around in my head ever since I went to <a href="http://whatleydude.com/2010/10/not-one-but-2screen/">my first 2screen event</a> back in October 2010.</p>
<p>It was a big deal then and it&#8217;s a bigger deal now.</p>
<p>With <a href="http://www.wdng.net/webwirearticles1.cfm/ID/1878">the increase of iPad penetration</a> and the continuous growth of <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2012/4/European_Mobile_Gaming_Gets_Social">the smartphone market</a>, the notion of <em>2screening</em> is becoming more and more commonplace. In fact, <a href="http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/double-vision-global-trends-in-tablet-and-smartphone-use-while-watching-tv/">a recent Neilsen survey</a> found that 80% of tablet and 78% of smartphone owners <a href="http://www.applicoinc.com/second-screen-viewing-opens-new-mobile-marketing-opportunities/">used their device while watching TV at least once</a> during a 30 day period.</p>
<p>In the app-world, services such as <a href="http://zeebox.com/">ZeeBox</a> and <a href="http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/44837/sky-sports-for-ipad-pictures">Sky Sports for iPad</a> are doing very good things indeed. Both integrating news, stats and social media streams into your second screen; providing a suitable data-based accompaniment to your visual consumption.</p>
<p>However, I want to talk about <em>television</em>-based social media integration (not app-based).<br />
This kind of stuff -</p>

<p>That&#8217;s how Sky One&#8217;s &#8216;<a href="http://sky1.sky.com/sky1hd-shows/got-to-dance-home">Got to Dance</a>&#8216; handles it and many other broadcasters follow suit. BBC One is getting in on the act too, here using a Twitter wall backstage for the UK edition of &#8216;<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00k96j4">The Voice</a>&#8216;.</p>
<p><a title="Twitterwall by whatleydude, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/whatleydude/7002799314/"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8147/7002799314_25458ac34a_z.jpg" alt="Twitterwall" width="525" height="254" /></a></p>
<p>What do these examples all have in common?</p>
<p>Fundamentally, they are all bringing (or at least attempting to bring) the conversation from the second screen, to the first. Which, correct me if I&#8217;m wrong, <strong>kind of defeats the object of the second screen</strong>.</p>
<p>Whether it&#8217;s reading out tweets during the credits of <a href="http://www.itv.com/celebrityjuice/">Celebrity Juice</a> on ITV2 or talking about Facebook wall posts inbetween programmes on BBC3, broadcasters seem to be <strong>obsessed</strong> with sharing (read &#8216;owning&#8217;) viewer social media.</p>
<p>Recognising that conversation takes place <em>away </em>from their platform(s), TV + social media work best together when television directs its audience to the conversation medium, as opposed to smashing them in the face with it via another.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.e4.com/sororitygirls/">Sorority Girls</a>, an E4 TV show, flashes up their hashtag both at the start and at the end of their show <em>as well as</em> when going into ad breaks.</p>
<p>This is good! This is television saying -</p>
<p><em>&#8216;Hey, perhaps some people are actually <strong>watching</strong> our shows when they&#8217;re on and, instead of going to the kettle during an ad break, they&#8217;re turning to Twitter!&#8217;</em></p>
<p>- and giving the audience <del>a</del> your hashtag at this point is a <strong>very good idea</strong>. You own it, you guide it, you <em>track</em> it.</p>
<p>Ignoring The Voice for a second, the BBC actually <a href="http://rooreynolds.com/2010/10/22/hashtags-on-programmes-its-the-bat-signal/">do this quite well</a>, both with <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006t1q9">Question Time</a> and <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mkw3">Have I Got News For You</a>, for example:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="#HIGNFY" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4091/5097861628_bce663aba3.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="315" /></p>
<p style="text-align: right;"><em>via <a href="http://rooreynolds.com/2010/10/22/hashtags-on-programmes-its-the-bat-signal/">Roo Reynolds</a></em></p>
<p>Little pointers like this give you, the viewer, <em>the option</em> of tracking (and joining) the back-channel. If you understand what it means, you join the conversation. Perfect.</p>
<p>I guess this is one big plea to broadcasters to <strong>just stop</strong> reading out tweets and Facebook updates on the telly. Seriously, it just doesn&#8217;t work.</p>
<p>Finally, and returning to the opening image of this post, the new trailer for Prometheus aired recently during the first break of Homeland. Channel 4&#8242;s own announcer was employed also, asking viewers to tweet their reactions using the hashtag #areyouseeingthis.</p>
<p>So far, so good. Right? Right.</p>
<p>Except that, 20mins later (during the <em>next</em> ad break), those very tweets were displayed onscreen for all to see.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="2screen hell" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FUzs9JeXRkg/T6Di0-4NWTI/AAAAAAAAD3E/yKWx04filug/s1600/IMG_20120501_210957.jpg" alt="" width="525" height="391" /></p>
<p style="text-align: right;"><em>via <a href="http://digital-examples.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/prometheus-twitter-tv-ad-in-homeland.html">Digital Examples</a></em></p>
<p>Yes that&#8217;s actually a TV ad you&#8217;re seeing there, with (clearly moderated) tweets displaying instead of your usual commercial break. Mental.</p>
<p><a href="http://econsultancy.com/uk/blog/9767-prometheus-ad-campaign-reaches-15m-twitter-users-but-was-it-worth-it">Reports state</a> that this activity reached a potential audience of <strong>15m users</strong>. <em>(Note: POTENTIAL audience. That&#8217;s the number of every tweet with the hashtag, multiplied by their sum of their followers &#8211; ie: not a real number)</em>. And while this kind of exercise is a great advert <strong>for Twitter</strong>, it leaves existing fans and users feeling a bit&#8230; empty.</p>
<p>In closing, <em>encouraging</em> viewers to join an online conversation is one thing, replaying that conversation to them 20mins later is <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/scottm/status/196698589592961024">just a pain in the oculars</a>.</p>
<p>Discuss.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Announced last Thursday as, believe it or not, the <em>third</em> device in the Samsung Galaxy S range. The SGSIII was all set to inherit the crown of &#8216;biggest selling non-iPhone / smartphone of the year&#8217; from last year&#8217;s winner, the SGSII.</p>
<p>At least, that&#8217;s what we <em>thought</em>.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t argue with the numbers &#8211; in 2011, the SGSII was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_mobile_phones#2011">a fantastically popular phone</a> and Samsung, with its large screen, speedy graphics and <a href="https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;ion=1#sclient=psy-ab&amp;hl=en&amp;site=webhp&amp;q=define%20touchwiz&amp;oq=&amp;aq=&amp;aqi=&amp;aql=&amp;gs_l=&amp;pbx=1&amp;fp=c64aaa748e82bb1b&amp;ion=1&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&amp;biw=1140&amp;bih=611">TouchWiz&#8217;d</a> version of Android &#8211; hit the sweet spot for consumer awareness + desire for the best Android phone on the market.</p>
<p>Admittedly, I was never a fan. I prefer my Androids to be pure Google experiences and both HTC + Samsung (amongst others) like to skin their OS accordingly. It&#8217;s a bit rubbish and generally gets in the way of being able to actually use the phone&#8230; but still, I can see why some people like it.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m rambling. Let&#8217;s get cut to the chase -</p>
<p>Is the SGSIII a worthy successor, <em>is it actually any good? </em></p>
<p>Before I answer that question, let&#8217;s make one thing very clear:<strong> </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em><strong>I have not had hands on with this device <span style="text-decoration: underline;">at all</span>. </strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em>What you are about to read is pure conjecture based upon the opinions of trusted friends &amp; peers, images &amp; video from the launch event, and several years working in and around the mobile industry. </em></p>
<p>Understood? Good. I don&#8217;t exactly love <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Whatleydude/status/198644999045386240">this kind of post</a>, but to those of you that are still here, thanks &#8211; there&#8217;s a few things I&#8217;d like to cover -</p>
<p><strong>1: The Samsung SGSIII is ugly + made of cheap plastic</strong></p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>I am going to just go ahead and say it: Samsung needs to fire its entire handset design department and start over.</p>
<p>— Eric Zeman (@phonescooper) <a href="https://twitter.com/phonescooper/status/198392961237647361" data-datetime="2012-05-04T12:45:42+00:00">May 4, 2012</a></p></blockquote>
<p>As per my note above, I agree with Eric&#8217;s comment <em>purely based upon the <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/3/2995948/samsung-galaxy-s3-first-hands-on-pictures">photos, videos and posts</a> I have seen from the launch event. </em>But even so, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/jonchoo/status/198132408648867841">he&#8217;s not alone</a>, and the man has a point. And while it might be harsh (I&#8217;ve seen worse devices), we &#8211; the industry at large &#8211; were just expecting something <em>more</em>.</p>
<p>And actually, while we&#8217;re at it, when your software is fundamentally the same across different handsets, <strong>design</strong> is <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Whatleydude/status/198139675045662721">a fundamental key selling point</a>. It&#8217;s why I rock a Lumia 800 and it&#8217;s why <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Whatleydude/status/198133896179748865">I&#8217;ll recommend the HTC One X over the SGSIII</a> should someone ask me about Android phones.</p>
<h4><strong>2: The Samsung SGSIII features <del>some</del> a sweet innovation</strong></h4>
<p>The word &#8216;innovation&#8217; is bandied about too fast and loose these days however, reading <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/05/03/samsung-the-death-of-the-spec-gives-way-to-the-birth-of-the-human-touch/">this post TechCrunch</a> shortly after the SGSIII announcement I was actually quite impressed by one particular paragraph -</p>
<blockquote><p>“The Galaxy S III looks deep into your eyes and only turns off when you do,” noted Jean Daniel Ayme to the audience. That is to say, <strong>the screen will note when your eyes are on it and will stay “awake” for as long as you look at it</strong>. “It knows precisely what we are doing and our intentions.”<strong><br />
</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Now this is more like it.</p>
<p>While &#8216;creepy&#8217; is a word I&#8217;ve heard a couple of times since discussing this particular addition to the handset, having a phone that turns on *when I look at it* is actually kind of awesome. I like this, a lot. Proper ethnographical research, informing technological innovation. More of this please.</p>
<h4><strong>3. TouchWiz Android is horrible</strong></h4>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>TouchWiz still makes my eyes bleed though. The icons just look so&#8230; dated.</p>
<p>— James Whatley (@Whatleydude) <a href="https://twitter.com/Whatleydude/status/198135291364638720" data-datetime="2012-05-03T19:41:49+00:00">May 3, 2012</a></p></blockquote>
<p>As Android skins go, HTC Sense is pretty darn ugly but, TouchWiz takes it to a whole new level. If you want a &#8216;pure&#8217; Google experience with Android, buy a Nexus. Other device manufacturers can&#8217;t be trusted.</p>
<h4><strong>4. The SGSIII is a HUGE disappointment</strong></h4>
<p>As much as I dislike <a href="http://whatleydude.com/2012/04/freefall-photography-the-htc-one/">their current advertising</a>, the HTC One X is probably my favourite Android device on the market today and the SGSIII has done nothing to change that. But don&#8217;t just take my word on it, the out pour of disappointment around this particular phone launch is <strong>staggering</strong> -</p>
<p>For example &#8211; &#8216;<a href="http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/4/2998464/how-samsung-broke-my-heart">How Samsung Broke My Heart</a>&#8216;, &#8216;<a href="http://www.droid-life.com/2012/05/04/the-galaxy-s-iii-is-a-massive-disappointment-opinion/">The Galaxy SIII is a “Me Too” Device and a Disappointment</a>&#8216; and &#8216;<a href="http://www.intomobile.com/2012/05/04/dear-internet-i-am-incredibly-sorry-overhyping-disappointment-galaxy-s-iii/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+intomobile%2Fstefan+%28IntoMobile+-+Ring+Nokia%29">Dear Internet: I am incredibly sorry for over-hyping the disappointment that is the Galaxy S III</a>&#8216; are just three well-written and well-informed pieces that I&#8217;ve read over the past couple of days, of which I am sure there are many more.</p>
<p>Sad times.</p>
<p>And, even though I happily acknowledge that I haven&#8217;t even played with the SGSIII yet, I can safely say: if you&#8217;re in the market for an Android phone, look at <a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_nexus-4219.php">the Galaxy Nexus</a> or check out <a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_x-4320.php">the HTC One X</a>.</p>
<p>Cheers.</p>

<p><a href="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/bb.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4148" title="Blunderbuss" src="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/bb.png" alt="" width="525" height="165" /></a></p>
<p><strong>1. Jack White</strong><br />
First, this fairly-lengthy [but totally worth reading] profile piece from The New York Times &#8216;<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/08/magazine/jack-white-is-the-savviest-rock-star-of-our-time.html?_r=1">Jack outside of the box</a>&#8216; was a great read at the start of the week. They really do mean it when they say &#8216;Jack White is the coolest, weirdest, savviest rock star of our time&#8217;.</p>
<p>If anything, just read it purely for the comedy Tom Jones anecdote midway through&#8230;</p>
<p>Second, White&#8217;s first solo album, <a href="http://open.spotify.com/user/whatleydude/playlist/295dtvkT88cC0ZNfgJfA1U">Blunderbuss</a>, launched this week <em>and <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jack-white-blunderbuss-beastie-boys-319535">debuted at number one</a> </em>on the Billboard 100. Nicely done. The album is pretty damn good &#8211; listen to the album [Spotify link] now, or just give the first track, <strong>Missing Pieces</strong>, a go below -</p>
<p><iframe src="https://embed.spotify.com/?uri=spotify:track:6loDM5UMsxrF0fmiWHzm08" frameborder="0" width="525" height="80"></iframe></p>
<p><strong>2. Marvel Movie Universe Infographic</strong><br />
It struck me last weekend, after seeing the quite frankly <strong>awesome</strong> Avengers Assemble, that what the world really needed was some kind of visual timeline of how all the movies overlaid on each other and affected each others&#8217; respective stories.<br />
After all, it was revealed a couple of years ago that Iron Man 2 would set <em>before</em> the events of The Incredible Hulk (what, <a href="http://www.totalfilm.com/news/iron-man-2-set-before-incredible-hulk">you didn&#8217;t know</a>?).</p>
<p>Back to the point &#8211; my brain figured that someone had probably made this thing already and hey, a quick Google later, it turned out they had!</p>
<p><a href="http://media.comicbookmovie.com/images/users/gallerypictures/43688L.gif"><img class="alignnone wp-image-4150" title="mu" src="http://whatleydude.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/mu.png" alt="" width="525" height="213" /></a></p>
<p>Huzzah! The image above clicks through to the monster version but <a href="http://www.slashfilm.com/infographic-marvel-movie-universe-timeline/">Slash Film</a> has a clearer, listed description, for the more discerning viewer.</p>
<p><strong>3. Switch Off</strong><br />
No, not <a href="http://whatleydude.com/2011/03/relationships-matter/">another attempt</a> from me to tell you all how important it is to unplug from time to time. Instead, a <strong>huge</strong> mural reminding us (well, me at least) to do the same.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/escif-on-off-switch"><img class="alignnone" title="SWITCH IT" src="http://api.ning.com/files/JDawOCGBGEbql52NRbIdKkKYHluf2CKMFANRyRjDwgPet3jZe9kkeWIfJmIWu2GG6nH4lUJkBCOOkuHuVVjwZMqBPwJtXTtD/ESCIFstreetart.jpeg" alt="" width="525" height="787" /></a></p>
<p>Part of the Polish Katowice Street Art Festival, I think this is <em>quite</em> magnificent. There&#8217;s a whole other set of photos to be viewed over on <a href="http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/escif-on-off-switch">My Modern Met</a>. Great stuff.</p>
<p><strong>4. Olympics-based Tweeting for brands (or lack thereof)<br />
</strong>I read a blog post from Rax Lakhani recently, entitled &#8216;<a href="http://raxraxrax.com/2012/04/23/will-your-brand-be-tweeting-about-the-london-2012-olympic-games-this-summer-think-again/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+raxraxraxcom+%28RaxRaxRax%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader">Will your brand be tweeting about the London 2012 Olympic Games this Summer? Think again.</a>&#8216; It&#8217;s an interesting post as it talks about what will and will not be allowed in the realms of social media throughout this summer&#8217;s Olympics and, vitally, has <a href="http://www.bcathletevoice.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/SportLegal_SocialMedia.pdf">the documentation to back it up</a>.</p>
<p>Key quote?</p>
<blockquote><p>Companies that are not Olympic sponsors cannot link themselves with the Olympics. For example, Company X cannot tweet: “Good luck to Jane and John at the Olympic Games!”, because it links their brand with the Olympics and Olympic athletes.</p></blockquote>
<p>Alright, this is only <em>slightly</em> difficult to monitor BUT, am I the only one who smells snake oil around the potential / opportunistic Lawyer + Social Listening partnership? It will be an interesting few months over the Olympic period, especially when it comes to social.</p>
<p><strong>5. Today</strong><br />
Is <a href="http://www.thislittleladywenttolondon.com/2012/05/03/this-little-lady-is-off-to-hospital/">a big day</a> for someone very dear to me. It&#8217;s not been an easy road but, at last, we&#8217;re at a turning point. As we head into the weekend, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.</p>
<p>Not far now.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><em>Bonuses &#8211; this week has been a week of long form reading. First with <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/08/magazine/jack-white-is-the-savviest-rock-star-of-our-time.html?_r=1">the Jack White piece</a> I mentioned above; then &#8216;<a href="http://www.wilsonquarterly.com/article.cfm?aid=2153#.T5ELAbNw5X0.twitter">Mysteries of the Connected Age</a>&#8216; via The Wilson Quarterly; and finally &#8216;<a href="http://www.thecalmzone.net/2012/05/the-deceptive-nature-of-bipolar-a-first-hand-account/">The Deceptive Nature of Bipolar: a First Hand Account</a>&#8216; from the inspiring, moving and yet ever-insightful CALM Zone.  </em></p>

<p>I&#8217;m not frothing at the mouth half as much as I was when I <em>first</em> caught the original preview (I think it trailed in front of a Harry Potter or something) but still, it doesn&#8217;t look that bad.</p>
<p>Early previews give good promise too. It&#8217;s a big year for comic book films this year: <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0848228/">Avengers</a> is done (and is <em>killing</em> it), <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1345836/">Dark Knight Rises</a> is next, then The Amazing Spider-Man steps up.</p>

<p><strong>1. Iron Man</strong></p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="IRON MAN" src="http://cdn.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Avengers-Mondo-Poster-Iron-Man-1.jpg" alt="" width="525" height="787" /></p>
<p>This art work (<a href="http://www.mondotees.com/POSTERS_c_12.html">from Mondo</a>) is superb. I like, a lot. Speaking of which&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>2. Avengers Assemble!</strong><br />
It&#8217;s out this week. I&#8217;ve seen it. It&#8217;s awesome. You should see it too.<br />
(and yes, of course I&#8217;m going to review it &#8211; at some point)</p>
<p><strong>3. New Music</strong><br />
Two tracks of note (from the week before in fact, that I didn&#8217;t get time to blog this week) are <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwfNexdaIdU">X-Factor reject</a>, Aiden Grimshaw&#8217;s first single &#8211; &#8216;<a href="http://soundcloud.com/aidengrimshaw/is-this-love">Is this love?</a>&#8216;</p>
<p><iframe src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F43646105&amp;auto_play=false&amp;show_artwork=true&amp;color=ff7700" frameborder="no" scrolling="no" width="525" height="170"></iframe></p>
<p>And this awesome Gonzo 70&#8242;s-style remix of Adele vs Liquid Gold &#8211; &#8216;<a href="http://soundcloud.com/gonzofficial/substitute-rolling-in-the-deep">Rollin&#8217; in the Deep</a>&#8216;</p>

<p><strong>4. Prometheus<br />
</strong>Pretty much <a href="http://whatleydude.com/tag/prometheus">a weekly feature</a> at the moment&#8230;<strong><br />
</strong></p>
<p><img class="alignnone" title="Prometheus, bitches. Yeah. " src="http://www.filmofilia.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Prometheus.jpg" alt="" width="525" height="258" /></p>
<p>&#8230;but tickets have just gone on sale here in the UK (<a href="http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/bfi_imax/coming_soon/now_booking/prometheus_an_imax_3d_experience_15_tbc">if you know where to look</a>) and I&#8217;ve got mine booked in<em> &#8212; Bring it on.</em></p>
<p><strong>5. John Cleese on Creativity<br />
</strong>30mins of brilliance. Watch it.<strong><br />
</strong></p>
<p><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VShmtsLhkQg" frameborder="0" width="525" height="356"></iframe></p>

<p><img class="alignnone" title="Superman v Nuclear Man v2" src="https://josephmallozzi.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/iv-moon-faceoff1.png" alt="" width="525" height="352" /></p>
<p>You&#8217;ve all seen Superman IV right? If you haven&#8217;t you&#8217;re not missing out on much; I <a href="http://whatleydude.com/2012/03/superman-returns/">touched upon it recently</a> as being &#8216;<em>by far and away the worst of Reeve’s tenure</em>&#8216; &#8211; and I stand by that (it&#8217;s still good though).</p>
<p>If you <em>have</em> seen it, then you&#8217;ll recognise the chap on the right above as Nuclear Man, the <em>brawn</em> created by Supes&#8217; arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor.</p>
<p>However, on a recent journey around the more geekier corners of the internet, I happened upon an <strong>amazing</strong> nugget of footage that I never knew existed. Apparently, the Nuclear Man we know and <del>love</del> recognise is actually Nuclear Man <strong>V2</strong>. <em>Version 1</em> was originally in the film too, and Superman (as you&#8217;ll see very shortly) disposed of him easily &#8211; hence Lex Luthor going back around a second time and coming up with v2.</p>
<p>Thing is, v1 was eventually cut (I can&#8217; think why) and we only ever knew of v2.</p>
<p>What the HELL am I talking about?</p>

<p>Just when you thought Superman IV couldn&#8217;t get any worse, right?<br />
I&#8217;m just&#8230; lost for words.</p>
